Pierre Boulez: There are many pieces that could be described as
"the best of Mahler". But I find the musical vocabulary
of the Adagio particularly toMard-looking. For me, it's
a summation of all Mahler had ever written. At the same
time, it places a question mark over the future, indicating
that Mahler would have continued to develop if he'd
lived a little longer.

ln whid direction would he have developed?

Pierre Boulez: That's difficult to say. There are links with early
Schoenberg, for example, especially the Gurre-Lieder,
whose moods and range of expression come very close
to parts 0f the Adagio in terms of their musical language.
But we can't argue on this basis that Mahler
would necessarily have developed in the direction of
Schoenberg. In this respect his final work remains ambiguous.

El disco mas reciente de Pierre Boulez nos entrega dos piezas del compositor Polaco Karol Szymanowski, con el sonido de la Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra y el violín de Christian Tetzlaff.

El registro de Deutsche Grammophon incluye una conversación de Andrew Clements con Boulez en la que explica las razones de su incursión en la obra del autor Polaco.

Pierre Boulez honors singular Polish composer Karol Szymanowski by recording - live - the Violin Concerto no. 1 and the Symphony no. 3 "Song of the Night". Violin virtuoso Christian Tetzlaff and the Vienna Philharmonic are peerless participants. The two orchestral works are the high-water mark of Szymanowski's impressionism, an idiom mingling the refined sonorities of Debussy, Ravel, and late Scriabin with the impassioned Romanticism of the New German School.

En noviembre de 2006, Pierre Boulez condujo a la Chicago Symphony Orchestra en una memorable rendicion de la septima sinfonia, que hoy compartimos como un raro registro, puesto que no son numerosas las grabaciones en vivo de los conciertos Boulezianos. Entre los Mahleritas hay quien estima que esta es la mejor septima --en vivo--de todas. Nosotros reservamos ese lugar para la grabacion de Abbado que compartio StateWork en la red, y que segun creemos es el mejor registro en vivo de la septima que puede obtenerse. Este Boulez 2006 seria el el segundo mejor.

Hoy presentamos un estreno Boueleziano que nos llena de alegria compartir, tres piezas de Igor Stravinsky: Symphony in Three Movements, Four Etudes y la insuperable Pulcinella.
El registro fue realizado en vivo, en el Orchestra Hall at Symphony Center en Chicago, en las siguientes fechas: Symphony y Three Etudes del 26 al 28 de febrero; Pulcinella del 5 al 7 de marzo; ambos en 2009.
La Chicago Symphony Orchestra, dirigida por Pierre Boulez, Roxana Constantinescu (mezzo), Nicholas Phan (tenor), Kyle Keltelsen (bass.baritone). El sello disquero: RESOUND, una edicion de la Chicago Symphony Orchestra con recusrsos propios.

Hoy compartimos una pequeña joya muy difícil de encontrar, estaba casi perdida, en un Box-Set: Anthology of the Royal Concergebouw Orchestra,vol.3, LIVE the radio recordings 1960-1970 que reúne los conciertos transmitidos directamente en radio durante esa década.
La caja está formada por 14 CD`s, en el numero 9, se encuentra Il Canto Sospeso de Luigi Nono dirigido por Pierre Boulez, con las voces de Ilse Hollweg, Sophia Sante, y Friedrich Lenz.
Il canto sospeso, es una de las piezas más reconocidas de la música de vanguardia de la post-guerra, y lo distingue su altísimo contenido político mediante la musicalización de las cartas de adiós de los guerrilleros antifascistas condenados a muerte.Su composición es de 1955-56, y su estreno mundial se realizo en Colonia el 24 de octubre de 1956, con la Kölner Rundfunk-Sinfonie-Orchester y dirección de Hermann Scherchen.
Nono se habia encontrado, antes, con Boulez en la Darmstadt School (1951-1961)-- quizá el más radical de los experimentos dodecafónicos-- y desde entonces fue identificado junto con Boulez como figuras visibles de la música serial y las vanguardias musicales del siglo XX.
No tenemos noticia de la fecha de esta trasmisión radial, pero la vamos a investigar. Se reproduce el CD completo en formato APE+CUE.

Pierre Boulez-Notations, 12 pieces for piano -Ran Dank (2008)

En el marco del 2008 Sydney International Piano Competition of Australia el joven pianista Israeli Ran Dank ejecuto Notations, 12 pieces for piano de Pierre Boulez y gano el tercer lugar de la prestigiada competencia. Invitamos a escuchar a uno de los pianistas mas prometedores ejecutando las miniaturas del joven Boulez.

"Notations" (1945) is a series of twelve piano miniatures written in the very early days of Boulez's career and is fact the earliest piece he has published. Initially neglected after their composition, two Notations (5 and 9) were quietly used in "Pli selon pli", and then the work was fully uncovered in 1970s, when the composer embarked on orchestrating them. While the orchestral versions--much longer and of course with a greater range of colour--are impressive, the original piano Notations are a delight as well. Each consists only of twelve measures, featuring a twelve-tone row in much the same fashion as the work of Anton Webern. In spite of certain formal commonalities, however, the pieces widely range from free (e.g. 1) to tightly rhythmic (4, 6), contemplative (3) to frenetic (2). If you like Gyorgy Ligeti's "Musica Ricercata", you'll find this quite enjoyable.

La división europea de Sony ha lanzado una gigantesca reimpresion de las grabaciones que realizo Pierre Boulez,durante la segunda mitad del siglo pasado, para ese sello y para CBS --que hoy forma parte de Sony--.Se trata de un homenaje al gran compositor y director frances que alcanza 52 CD´s, en 11 Box-Set, que presentan las obras de Berg, Berlioz, Boulez, Debussy, Mahler-Wagner, Schoenberg I y II, Webern-Carter-Varese-Berio, Bartok-Scriabin, Ravel-Roussel, y Stravinsky- Messiaen- Dukas- Falla.
Son las grabaciones originales --todo indica que sin re-masterización--, que ya no se encontraban con facilidad en el mercado, por lo que este re-lanzamiento sera, sin duda, un importante empujón para hacer mas accesible la obra de Boulez como conductor de orquesta.
Para muchos de nosotros Pierre Boulez es el mejor director de orquesta vivo que existe, de manera que esta vasta empresa nos alegra especialmente.
