Pierre Boulez: There are many pieces that could be described as
"the best of Mahler". But I find the musical vocabulary
of the Adagio particularly toMard-looking. For me, it's
a summation of all Mahler had ever written. At the same
time, it places a question mark over the future, indicating
that Mahler would have continued to develop if he'd
lived a little longer.

ln whid direction would he have developed?

Pierre Boulez: That's difficult to say. There are links with early
Schoenberg, for example, especially the Gurre-Lieder,
whose moods and range of expression come very close
to parts 0f the Adagio in terms of their musical language.
But we can't argue on this basis that Mahler
would necessarily have developed in the direction of
Schoenberg. In this respect his final work remains ambiguous.

Dos obras del serialista electrónico Philippe Manoury, son dirigidas por Pierre Boulez al frente del Ensemble Intercontemporain, con la participación de Sophie Cherrier a la flauta, y Hideki Nagano, Dimitri Vassilakis a los pianos. La grabación de la disquera Musidisc es de 1999, y a pesar de su relevancia, es prácticamente imposible de encontrar en tiendas. Aquí la compartimos en formato sin pérdida (Flac), en un archivo de 304 MB. .

Philippe Manoury belongs to that generation of composers who, as young musicians, delighted in the nascent possibilities of electronic music at the recently opened IRCAM in Paris. Manoury distinguishes himself from others of his generation in two ways. The first is his continuing interest in serialism, while many who frequented IRCAM followed the spectralist tradition. The other is his interest in live electronics, eschewing any kind of works for tape and instead exploring the pairing of human performers with an electronic part that could react in real-time. The two pieces here, part of his cycle "Sonus ex machina", are representative of his output. Manoury wrote "Jupiter" for flute and electronics (1987) after Laurence Beauregard, then a flautist with the Ensemble Intercontemporain, developed a flute with switches on its keys to help a computer follow along. (There's a video floating around of Beauregard demonstrating it, but sadly he died soon afterward.) This technical development let the electronic part follow the unique playing style of the live flautist. As Sophie Cherrier plays on this recording, the electronic part blossoms out of her performance in a smooth and organic fashion, with a general shimmering background to the breathiness of the flute part. "La Partition du Ciel et de l'Enfer" for flute and 2 piano soloists, ensemble and electronics (1989) is an orchestral concertante meditation on the moods of two earlier works. One one hand, there's the slow, tranquil atmosphere of "Jupiter". On the other hand, we hear the savage keyboard attacks of "Pluton" for piano (1987, the first "Sonus ex machina" work). The electronic part here has great variety and is fine listening if your stereo is up to task. I think Manoury's work is worth seeking out if you've already heard the electronic works of Pierre Boulez. Manoury's "Pluton" (available on a now deleted Ondine disc) reminded me strongly of Boulez's "Repons", while "Jupiter" and "La Partition" look ahead to Boulez's "...explosante-fixe..." and "Sur Incises" respectively. I do think, however, that Manoury's pieces tend to be mainly gimmick with little behind the concept of pairing players and electronics, so I can't rate him as highly as Boulez. Nonetheless, there is a real magic to these endeavours in live electronics. Even after 20 years, when technology has progressed on, IRCAM's early successes still impress.

En noviembre de 2006, Pierre Boulez condujo a la Chicago Symphony Orchestra en una memorable rendicion de la septima sinfonia, que hoy compartimos como un raro registro, puesto que no son numerosas las grabaciones en vivo de los conciertos Boulezianos. Entre los Mahleritas hay quien estima que esta es la mejor septima --en vivo--de todas. Nosotros reservamos ese lugar para la grabacion de Abbado que compartio StateWork en la red, y que segun creemos es el mejor registro en vivo de la septima que puede obtenerse. La firma disquera Alemana Md&G Records ha editado un volumen de Homenaje a Stravinsky, reuniendo obras musica de camara de Pierre Boulez, Edison Vassilievich Denisov, Elliott Carter, Luciano Berio, Alfred Schnittke y del propio Igor Stravinsky, ejecutadas por el Ensemble Avantgarde.

El registro fue realizado en vivo, en el Orchestra Hall at Symphony Center en Chicago, en las siguientes fechas: Symphony y Three Etudes del 26 al 28 de febrero; Pulcinella del 5 al 7 de marzo; ambos en 2009.

Alex Ross, crítico de música de la revista The New Yorker , publico en 2007 un libro que renovó el interés por las obras y compositores del sangriento siglo XX.
Su libro, The Rest is Noise, Listening the Twentieth Century, ha tenido el merito inmenso de haber operado como una convocatoria para que, nuevos y viejos melómanos, iniciaran el recuento documentado de -por ejemplo:-La Segunda Escuela de Viena, de los autores bajo el dominio Nazi y Soviético, de la Vanguardia Francesa y los compositores Norteamericanos.
En un recorrido muy bien narrado, se puede acompañar a los grandes compositores del siglo --desde Mahler y Strauss hasta los Minimalistas--, con una reconstrucción de los Estrenos Mundiales, de los grandes escándalos ( el del Rito de la Primavera es especialmente divertido), y de las grandes polémicas musicales.
Nuestra devoción actual por Mahler, Schoenberg, Sibelius, Schostakovich, Copland, Boulez, o Berstein; se ubica --al regresar a su contexto-- como un momento, un pedazo, de un torrente en curso.
Siempre es sano reconocer la naturaleza colectiva de creación social de la cultura, donde los compositores no están solos en su sufrimiento y su invención. Así, Encontramos a Sibelius aislado por décadas sin poder hacer la Octava Sinfonía, a Mahler defendiendo a Schoenberg en la Viena reaccionaria del nuevo siglo, a Schostakovich enfrentado personalmente con el dictador asesino, a Copland y Berstein re-expresando lo popular por medios clásicos, en fin, a John Adams haciendo una ópera que se llamo Nixon en China. Para preparar este registro hemos vuelto al libro después de casi tres años y, confirmamos gozosamente que no tiene desperdicio. Es una gran obra que merece los múltiples premios que ha recibido.

Hoy compartimos una pequeña joya muy difícil de encontrar, estaba casi perdida, en un Box-Set: Anthology of the Royal Concergebouw Orchestra,vol.3, LIVE the radio recordings 1960-1970 que reúne los conciertos transmitidos directamente en radio durante esa década.
La caja está formada por 14 CD`s, en el numero 9, se encuentra Il Canto Sospeso de Luigi Nono dirigido por Pierre Boulez, con las voces de Ilse Hollweg, Sophia Sante, y Friedrich Lenz.
Il canto sospeso, es una de las piezas más reconocidas de la música de vanguardia de la post-guerra, y lo distingue su altísimo contenido político mediante la musicalización de las cartas de adiós de los guerrilleros antifascistas condenados a muerte.Su composición es de 1955-56, y su estreno mundial se realizo en Colonia el 24 de octubre de 1956, con la Kölner Rundfunk-Sinfonie-Orchester y dirección de Hermann Scherchen.
Nono se habia encontrado, antes, con Boulez en la Darmstadt School (1951-1961)-- quizá el más radical de los experimentos dodecafónicos-- y desde entonces fue identificado junto con Boulez como figuras visibles de la música serial y las vanguardias musicales del siglo XX.
No tenemos noticia de la fecha de esta trasmisión radial, pero la vamos a investigar. Se reproduce el CD completo en formato APE+CUE.

En esta entrega las grabaciones consagradas en que Pierre Boulez dirige obras de Maurice Ravel y Albert Roussel con las siguientes orquestas: BBC Symphony Orchestra, The Cleveland Orchestra, Ensemble Intercontemporain, y New York Philharmonic.
Se trata del registros capitales en la trayectoria de Boulez en tanto director de orquesta, realizados en un arco de tiempo que va de 1969 a 1979 y abarca en la biografía de Boulez trabajos múltiples y proyectos simultáneos con centralidad en Norteamérica, como la asesoría (advisor) de la Cleveland Orchestra (1970-72), puesto que ejerce en paralelo con la titularidad en la conducción de la BBC Symphony Orchestra --desde1971 hasta 1975--, y la dirección musical de la New York Philharmonic entre 1971 y 1977.
La etapa norteamericana de Boulez todavía se extenderá a la conducción de la Chicago Symphony Orchestra de la que fue Director Invitado Principal entre 1995–2006 - Principal Guest Conductor-- y Director Emeritus desde 2006 hasta el dia de hoy.
Quien se interese en la música del siglo XX encontrara en esta Caja de la Boulez Edition los materiales reunidos que llevaron su peculiar lectura de dos compositores clave de la música francesa a las audiencias Norteamericanas. En el marco del 2008 Sydney International Piano Competition of Australia el joven pianista Israeli Ran Dank ejecuto Notations, 12 pieces for piano de Pierre Boulez y gano el tercer lugar de la prestigiada competencia. Invitamos a escuchar a uno de los pianistas mas prometedores ejecutando las miniaturas del joven Boulez.

"Notations" (1945) is a series of twelve piano miniatures written in the very early days of Boulez's career and is fact the earliest piece he has published. Initially neglected after their composition, two Notations (5 and 9) were quietly used in "Pli selon pli", and then the work was fully uncovered in 1970s, when the composer embarked on orchestrating them. While the orchestral versions--much longer and of course with a greater range of colour--are impressive, the original piano Notations are a delight as well. Each consists only of twelve measures, featuring a twelve-tone row in much the same fashion as the work of Anton Webern. In spite of certain formal commonalities, however, the pieces widely range from free (e.g. 1) to tightly rhythmic (4, 6), contemplative (3) to frenetic (2). If you like Gyorgy Ligeti's "Musica Ricercata", you'll find this quite enjoyable.

La división europea de Sony ha lanzado una gigantesca reimpresion de las grabaciones que realizo Pierre Boulez,durante la segunda mitad del siglo pasado, para ese sello y para CBS --que hoy forma parte de Sony--.Se trata de un homenaje al gran compositor y director frances que alcanza 52 CD´s, en 11 Box-Set, que presentan las obras de Berg, Berlioz, Boulez, Debussy, Mahler-Wagner, Schoenberg I y II, Webern-Carter-Varese-Berio, Bartok-Scriabin, Ravel-Roussel, y Stravinsky- Messiaen- Dukas- Falla.
Son las grabaciones originales --todo indica que sin re-masterización--, que ya no se encontraban con facilidad en el mercado, por lo que este re-lanzamiento sera, sin duda, un importante empujón para hacer mas accesible la obra de Boulez como conductor de orquesta.
Para muchos de nosotros Pierre Boulez es el mejor director de orquesta vivo que existe, de manera que esta vasta empresa nos alegra especialmente.
